Quebec cinema in the past four years has been on a roll, achieving record-breaking shares of the domestic box office, an Oscar for Denys Arcand’s Les Invasions barbares, and international distribution for successes such as La Grande SÉduction and c.r.a.z.y.
This major conference seeks not only to examine the texts and contexts associated with this current phenomenon, but also to establish a balance-sheet of the forty or fifty years of Quebec cinema’s existence as such. The conference will also be concerned to look at Quebec cinema in its international context, and contributions are actively sought on its Atlantic, including Scottish, dimensions.
Proposals for papers are invited, of approximately 300 words, on any aspect of Quebec cinema, to reach us by 1 August 2006. Depuis quatre ans le cinéma québécois a le vent en poupe, battant tous les records au box-office national, et reconnu sur la scène internationale par l’Oscar pour Les invasions barbares et par une distribution significative pour des films à succès tels que La grande seduction et c.r.a.z.y.
Ce colloque vise non seulement à examiner les textes et les contextes qui jettent de la lumière sur ces phénomènes récents, mais aussi à dresser un bilan du cinéma québécois après 40 ou 50 ans d’existence en tant que tel. Nous aimerions aussi souligner les contextes internationaux dans lesquels il est utile d’analyser ce cinéma: nous pensons surtout à sa dimension atlantique, y compris écossaise.
